    Good thoughts as always, Mike.

You say that liberal Christians are more "flexible and accepting, and willing to concede on certain issues" and imply that that quality is what makes them more engaging than the "unbending fundamentalist". While I agree up to a point, I think it's important to see that "conceding on certain issues" can't be a basic requirement for open and constructive dialog. There has to be a way to *not* concede and still have open, constructive (and enjoyable) conversation, don't you think?

The issues I refer to are generally things that are unprovable. Yes, there are issues that we both should not concede on.

    Such as?
  • Mike aka MonolithTMA · 1 year ago
Things that we "know" to be right, usually also unprovable. I will not concede that homosexuality is sin, I would not expect them to concede to my position.

I'm not following you, Mike. Are you saying we *should* be willing to concede on unprovable things? Your replies to me and CK seem to be in conflict with each other.
  • Mike aka MonolithTMA · 1 year ago
I'm sorry, what I'm trying to say is there are things we are not willing to concede on.

    OK. A couple of questions.

    1) If two people have contrary POV's on an issue on which neither is willing concede, can constructive dialog still be had on THAT issue or ANY subsequent unrelated issue?

    2) Does the possibility of further constructive dialog depend more on the issue involved or the people (personalities) involved?
  • Mike aka MonolithTMA · 1 year ago
    1. Of course.

    2. It depends on the personalities.
  • Laughing Boy · 1 year ago
I agree in both cases, but I see a lot of #1 being false.

Is that a Christmas Tree behind you?
  • Mike aka MonolithTMA · 1 year ago
Oh I see that too. It's hard to get some Christians to admit they could be wrong even for the sake of argument!

Yes, that is a Christmas tree behind me. I took that picture years ago amongst a series of pictures to be possibly used with my blog. It's supposed to look contemplative, since at the time I was fascinated by Teresa of Avila and St. John of The Cross.Does it succeed? ;-)
